Did you know you were created in the image of God? That is what the Bible says. In Genesis 1:27, it says God created man in His own image. That means we carry a part of God. None of us are God of course and our understanding of God only increases as we spend time reading His Word and talking with Him. However, if each of us carries a part of God, wouldn’t we also need each other to form a deeper understanding of who He is? It is like putting pieces of a puzzle together to get the complete picture.
I also understand that the way we view the world has to do with what we allow to shape us. What is responsible for the lens in which we view the world? Is it trauma, culture, family dynamics, or are we allowing God to continuously shape and mold us? There is definitely grace for working through the things that we may have allowed to warp our lens, but that does not cancel out the fact that we still carry part of God. We need to understand that God created only one of us. He values each and every one of us so much, He put a piece of Himself in us. If we spend our lives trying to be someone else or worse be someone we think others want us to be, we rob the world of the uniqueness that God created in us.
Why is that so important? We were born with these particular gifts, in this particular time period for a purpose. All of these things were planned and orchestrated by the God of the universe. I think from birth the deception is that we are unimportant and insignificant. Nothing could be further from the truth. In Jeremiah 1 the Bible says that before God formed us in the womb, He knew us. Each and everyone of us has a destiny and if we don’t live it, who will? We all carry a part of God that other people need. No one has all the answers and if we choose to live in isolation from others, we will never realize fully who God created us to be nor will we have the privilege of experiencing God as other people experience Him.
I sure have an appreciation for other people in the body of Christ. The way some people share these revelations they get from God or the song God gave them to share in worship or the wisdom some have for the things going on in the world today. If I spend my time wondering why I am not like them, I am totally missing the point. God didn’t create me to be like them. He created me to be like me and putting all of us together paints a more clear picture of who God is. I feel that is why we are called to be the body of Christ and not individuals for Christ. So the next time you are tempted into thinking you wish you were more like someone else, remember God created you exactly the way you are because He chose you to carry a unique piece of Him.
