Is God Lonely For You?

Several years ago I heard a speaker ask a question of the audience. Her question went something like, “Do you know there are parts of God’s heart that are lonely for you?” The question struck a chord with me. Up until that point, I honestly had never thought about that before. The very idea of the God of the universe who has or can create anything and everything, would be lonely for me was a completely new thought for me.

I had been taught from a young child that God loved me. He had loved me so much He had sent His one and only son to die on the cross as payment for my sins. I had also been taught that God cared about my life and the things I was experiencing. But I think that I viewed God as caring about my life as someone would from a distance. Every now and then He would look over at me, check to see that I was still following directions and nod His head in approval or see how He needed to correct me. However, this speaker’s question opened me up to the reality that God was a deeply personal God. Was it true that God was lonely for me? And if so, what did that type of relationship with God look like?

In Ephesians 1:3 (The Passion Translation) the Bible says, “Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus – all because he sees us wrapped into Christ. This is why we celebrate him with all our hearts!”

Did you catch that? God, our Heavenly Father, sees us wrapped into Christ. Meaning, when He looks at us, He sees us through the lens of Jesus. Think about Jesus for a moment and who He was on this Earth. What did His life look like? How did He interact with the people around Him? Jesus even said in John 14:9 (NKJV) “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” Jesus is saying I am not doing or saying anything my Father wouldn’t do or say.

Therefore when God looks at us, He sees parts of Himself because we are created in His image. He also sees us through the lens of Jesus. That should change your perspective of how God sees you!

Looking further in Ephesians 1:5-6 (The Passion Translation) the Bible says, “For it was always in his perfect plan to adopt us as his delightful children, through our union with Jesus, the Anointed One, so that his tremendous love that cascades over us would glorify his grace for the same love he has for the Beloved, Jesus, he has for us. And this unfolding plan brings him great pleasure!”

The SAME love He has for Jesus He has for us! The word “cascades” in this scripture also caught my attention. Picture with me if you will, standing under a waterfall and the water cascading down upon you. The water will be a constant flow on you. The flow doesn’t end. You are the one that has to choose to step out of the waterfall to end the cascade of water flowing down on you. I think the same is true for us and God’s love. The only way we don’t feel God’s love for us is to step out of His cascade of love. He loves us because He created us and He sees us through the lens of Jesus. His love doesn’t end.

Since God created us, He knows us better than anyone else knows us. Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV) says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you.” God knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows how we think and why we react the way we do and why certain sin pitfalls trip us up more than others. If this is true, why do we try to hide ourselves from Him? Why don’t we run fully at Him and ask for His help and His wisdom? If God loves us the way He loves Jesus, we don’t have to fear Him falling out of love with us.

In Romans 8:27 (The Passion Translation) the Bible says, “God, the searcher of the heart, knows fully our longings, yet he also understands the desires of the Spirit, because the Holy Spirit passionately pleads before God for us, his holy ones, in perfect harmony with God’s plan and our destiny. “ And then in vs 34, “Who then is left to condemn us? Certainly not Jesus, the Anointed One! For he gave his life for us , and even more than that, he has conquered death and is now risen, exalted, and enthroned by God at his right hand. So how could he possibly condemn us since he is continually praying for our triumph?”

These scriptures show us that God created us and knows our longings and desires. The Holy Spirit passionately prays for us and Jesus is praying for our triumph. Did you ever think about the fact that the Holy Spirit and Jesus are praying for you? God is truly for us, not against us. He is not waiting for us to step out of line, so He can punish us. He wants us to fulfull our divine purpose and to long to be with Him just as much as He longs to be with us.

I think if we could ever fully grab onto our identity in Christ, it would change the way we live our lives. If we can understand that God’s heart longs to connect to our heart and also understand the deepest desire of our hearts is to connect to God’s heart, we will begin to grasp our identity in Jesus.

I encourage you to take some time with God and allow Him to connect to your heart. Spend some time worshipping Him. Then Allow Him to tell you how much He loves you and how He views you. Just like any relationship we need to make time with God a part of our daily lives. There are so many other voices out there trying to define you. But the one that created you knows you best, and His voice should be the one most heard.

Remember Jesus and the Holy Spirit are both praying for you and cheering you on! That alone should encourage you!
