Season changes can be very exciting, especially if we know they are happening. When we can look at the calendar, for example, and see that we are leaving winter months soon and heading into the spring, it can be invigorating. Some people may even be so energized they engage in what is known as spring cleaning where nothing in the house is safe from scrutiny and scrubbing. If an item is deemed as still useful and is allowed to stay in the house, it will most definitely be subject to organization and cleaning.
There can also be season changes in our lives represented by new jobs or the birth of a new child, or moving to a new house. However what happens when a season change in our life occurs that we were not aware of. There were no calendars or concrete events that occurred that signaled a season change. But in fact a season change occurred in our hearts and spirits. Sometimes it feels like God turned a corner and we continued to go straight. Perhaps it may feel like God became upset with us and left. Even though that may be what it feels like at times nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, scripture tells us that God will never leave us nor forsake us, and He is always interested in deepening our relationship with Him.
So why do we experience these season changes? I think it is because God desires for us to constantly grow and change and become closer to HIm. God is so huge I think it may take us forever to experience every aspect of HIm. We often as humans like to find something that works and stick with it, but many times that hinders growth. And God is definitely interested in growth. Many times when there is a season change, God is inviting us to go deeper with Him. It is not that what we were doing was bad. It is instead time to grow. He is challenging us to question our own thinking or deepen our understanding in what we believe. Maybe instead of how we always read or interact with the Bible, we allow Him to lead us to different sections of the Bible and journal what we learn. Maybe instead of spending the time we normally do in prayer, we walk around our neighborhood and pray for specific neighbors as God leads us to. There are so many ways God would like to partner with us. We just have to be open to change and hearing what He is saying.
God is always creating and making things new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” I think many of us read this scripture and understand that Paul is speaking about becoming a Christian and choosing to serve Christ. I believe that is true. We come to Christ and submit our lives to Him, and He really does make us new. But I don’t think that happens just once. I am not saying we need to say the sinner’s prayer and ask Jesus into our lives continually. I am saying that as we change and grow and become closer to God he constantly makes us new. He continually makes us a new creation. We can continually throw off doubt, unbelief and sin and change our ways of thinking to align with God’s way of thinking. After all, that is what repentance truly is, changing the way we think. There is great comfort in knowing that God will not leave us where we are at.
So the next time you feel that maybe God turned a corner and you went straight, I challenge you to ask the Lord if it is a season change. Ask him what he wants to do in this next season and how you can partner with him to grow and change into the fullness of who He created you to be. Remember He is always for us, never against us. His desire is for you to live in all He designed you to be. He gave everything He had so that there would be no barriers between us and Him. He loves us more than we can understand.
